The boring stack, and why clients like it

Astro, TypeScript and Postgres aren't exciting. That's the point: in two years someone else can hire for them.

A stack of well-used programming books on a windowsill in afternoon light.

Clients rarely ask what I build with. They ask whether they’ll be stuck with me. The honest answer is the stack.

Pick what can be hired for

Astro for sites, TypeScript everywhere, Postgres for anything that needs to remember. None of it is new. All of it has a big pool of developers who could pick up the project tomorrow.

Small tools, few of them

Every dependency is a promise to update it. I’d rather write forty lines than add a package that does four hundred things, and I’d rather use the platform than either.

Excitement goes into the product

The interesting part of a ferry booking is the ferry. The stack should get out of the way.

Ask about my work

Services, prices, projects and availability

Hi! Ask me what Mara builds, roughly what it costs, how a project runs or when she's free.
